FAQs
WHAT IS 20 TON STUDIOS?
20 Ton Studios is an artist collective on the North side of Milwaukee. We have a variety of artists working in the studio covering a myriad of disciplines, backgrounds, mediums, and interests.
WHY Are You Named 20 TON STUDIOS?
We got our name from the original 20-ton overhead crane, installed by Pawling & Harnischfeger in 1911, which rests peacefully near the front entrance. A working 2-ton overhead crane currently operates on the same crane rails.
WHAT WAS 20 TON STUDIOS BEFORE THE ARTISTS MOVED IN?
20 Ton Studios used to be an electric substation. The Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company (TMER&L) constructed the building as an electric substation in 1911 for $20,000 (approx. $6 Million USD today). Its purpose was to transform high voltage power to lower power which could be used by the surrounding neighborhood.
