Artist Statement

I have been an artist for over 30 years.

My work has progressed from sculptural Brutalist narratives to densely packed and weighted line drawings harkening back to my architectural days, to more recently, sardonic surreal and contemporary pop paintings. There are many aspects of my earlier work that appear as muses in my sketchbook, and guide my current concerns and objectives as an artist when working on canvas, paper, or whatever salvageable surface I find.

Now, my work feels new, witty, and full of potential.

Working freely from my studio, I collect and sample images of familiar pop culture icons and trivial, banal items. Maybe it's an internal political outburst or a sign of the times, but the work I create oftentimes pushes the boundaries of the ordinary. Through a crude assemblage of the images and layers of mixed medium and paint onto a canvas, glass, or paper, my artwork takes shape. The resulting works lend jeering gestures at closely held ideas of truth. Each piece created requires patient looking; the final image works on the viewer over time, slowly revealing nuance and humor.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity of sharing my artwork and creative process with you!
